Six year old drives himself to school… nearly

January 8th, 2009

It has been reported in the news today that a six year old boy in Virginia, USA (only in the states) was so desperate to get to school, that having missed the school bus, he decided to take his fathers car and drive himself there instead, apparently he didn’t want to miss PE and breakfast. His mother was sound asleep in bed.

The youngster managed to drive 6 miles (10km) before finally wrapping the Ford Taurus around a lamppost. He lost control of the car whilst weaving though rush hour traffic and over taking slower vehicles. When questioned by the police, he told them that he had learned to drive using video games.

After being treated for minor injuries the boy was taken by the police… to school! Gutted, poor little sod didn’t even manage to get the day off for shock and to top it all off his parents are being charged with endangering their child. The six year old and his four year old brother are also now both in the care of the local authorities.

So this morning as I was loading the kids in to the car, my eldest, who is nearly four and obsessed with cars, clambers in while I go and get his little sister. With the cold snap I have been starting the car up while I load children into their seats, so without thinking I left the engine running with Jack getting himself into his car seat.

I returned to find Jack sitting in the drivers seat ‘pretending’ to drive. “Daddy, how do I make the car go backwardsoff the drive like you?”. He is trying to ram the gear stick into a gear at this point. So after jumping in and switching the engine off, I explained that you need a special licence to drive a car that only grown ups could get, to which he replied “It’s ok daddy, I have my driving licence from Legoland so I can drive your fast car.” hmm

I am sure the wife would have been really impressed with my BMW M3 implanted in the garage doors if jack had managed to find first gear. Note to self… keep keys in pocket until ready to leave home.
